Following on from our previous blog post, How can we all Improve our Health, is information about Ultra Processed Food and how it affects health.
One of the best and easiest ways to improve your health is to stop eating ultra processed food. You know, those foods in a packet, that when you read them with your magnifying glass, have an ingredient list of around twenty that would need an industrial kitchen to reproduce.
In the video below, Michael Pollan and Joel Salatin discuss this. I have added the times on the video that you can go straight to without having to search for it. It starts around 33:50
The people eating processed food were eating 500 calories more per person per day
This little doozy is taken from a recent talk at the Homestead Festival in the US. The numbers are the location on the youtube video. Yes, I have done the hard work for you.

There was a very skeptical scientist at the National Institute of Health named Kevin Hall who was like didn’t believe
33:58
this idea. That he thought nutrients, like most nutrition people, it was all about the nutrients. If you had too much sugar
34:04
or too much fat you were going to have a problem. He gets people to live in a hotel for a month so he completely
34:11
controls their diet. He gives them a choice, ultra processed food with a set
34:18
amount of the various nutrients and then Whole Foods again.
34:24
Exact same nutrients, and people could choose. So for the first two weeks they’d be
34:31
on the ultra processed food then they’d switch them over to the Whole Foods. They could eat as much as they wanted in each case.
The people eating the ultra processed food ate 500 more calories per person per day.
So it’s food that has been engineered to get you to overeat.
That’s all the sophisticated food Sciences about that now there may be other things going on. Ultra processed food has very little
34:56
fiber it’s completely absorbed in the small intestine, leaving nothing for your microbiome. That may be a factor
35:04
I mean we’re still figuring out what is the problem with this kind of food but anyway this food is not only dominating
35:11
our diet but we’re exporting it now to countries like Brazil.
Does anything in these notes remind you of the cigarette industry tactics?
When I watch these videos, I see how blessed I am to live here at Kumbartcho. At my door I have edible weeds that are great greens. The chooks not only give me eggs but wake me in the morning. I have cattle and feral pigs. What more could a man want.

If you can, support the local farmers. Go and see them and see how they produce food that is a boost to your body. At present Coles and Woolies determine what you eat. Break the shackles.
You are welcome to visit Kumbartcho Project Farm. Call me on 0428 931 880 to arrange a suitable time.
Get those dandelions on the dinner tonight.
Dandelions are definitely safe to eat both raw and cooked, and you can eat almost all parts of the dandelion, aside from the stem. The dandelion greens, especially, taste great when mixed into dishes. The flavor is a bit bitter, especially when eaten raw, but in a pleasant way.
Enjoy the day
Until next blog post… Shane
